Well, good morning everyone. It is good to see so many faces. Is this thing on? We're going to trust that it is. What a joyous kind of weekend we have had here at Gateway Bible Church. And one Friday we got to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Abe and Brenda Fair. And then the very next day, we got to celebrate day one of Walker and Lily's wedding.
So that was excellent as well. And what I love about a church family, and this is very unusual in the secular world, but what I love about a church family is there were people at both celebrations. There at the 50th wedding anniversary and simultaneously the next day there to celebrate day one of a young couple. So what a what a great great weekend.
And now we get to come together and we get to sit under the authority of God's word. If you have your Bibles, I'm going to invite you. We are in Hebrews chapter 11. And as we begin, I want to I want to try to paint a picture. I want to try to paint this picture. Imagine yourself. You're sitting there in your home and you're looking at your mantle on your fireplace where you have a myriad of idols and gods that you worship every single day.
On day one, you worship this God. On day two, you worship this God. And as you go, you're not only beyond your mantle, but around your house, around your home, you have idols for every season and every day and in order for fertility and grain and all of these things. This is what you sacrifice to. This is what you worship. And now these are not just your own on your on your you've conjured these up, but these idols have stemmed back not only to your your father, but your your grandfather and your grandfather's grandfather and your grandfather's grandfather.
All your family has known is worshiping and sacrificing to all of these gods. This is your life. Until one day a God that you've never worshiped shows up and he tells you, "I want you to step out of your home. I want you to forsake every idol, everything you've ever worshiped.
Not only that you've worshiped, but your grandfather and your grandfather's grandfather, all your family has ever known. I want you to abandon those completely. I want you to leave your home and I want you to move. I think the natural question that each one of us would ask us, "Oh, where am I moving to, oh God, that I have never heard of or seen or worshiped?" And his response to you is, "I'll show you as you leave."
I have a feeling that every single one of us in this room would be like, "No." But putting yourself in this situation, you say, "Okay." You walk out your front door, your possessions, your wife, and oddly your nephew is going to come with you. And you are going to journey some 500 miles to a place you've never been, to a place you've never seen.
All in trust of this God. Now, on top of all of that, I want you to imagine that you're actually 75 years old. And part of this promise, I kid you not, you have no children because you're 75 years old. Part of this promise is, I am going to give you a myriad of children. Children, so many that you can't even count them.
As much as the stars in the sky or the sand on the beach, that's going to be your family heritage. And so as you travel to this place you've never seen following this God that you have never heard of or worshiped before. Your 99th birthday rolls around and this child that this God has promised you still hasn't shown up.
And so you're in communication with this God. And lo and behold, you have a child. And then this God comes to you one more time. And he says, "You've had this child. I would like you to take him up to the mountain. I'd like you to lay him on an altar and I want you to kill him." So you out of faith and trust walk up that mountain prepared to slay your firstborn.
Remember I've been promised a lot more. And this God says, "I want you to kill this son." And at the moment where you are willing to do so, this God steps in and says, "No, you have shown your faith." and the rest is history. Once again, I think this this paints kind of you fiction can't make this kind of thing up. I think not one of us in this room would have said yes.
And yet we are going to examine a man this morning who said yes to all of that. The faith of Abraham is an unbelievable picture. And it is as we journey through this life, as we walk the race that the Lord has for us and we remember we we set out at the beginning, our focus is not the people that we've looked at, but as we focus and zero in our attention on Christ, we look to our left and to our right and we see men and women of faith and we can be strengthened by theirs.
And we look to our left and we see Abraham's faith and we say, "Man, if he had such faith, if he trusted the Lord even to lay his own son on the altar, surely surely I can navigate the hardships of this life and trusting everything to this God." And so I trust this morning that we will be strengthened and encouraged as we examine Abraham. So join me. Hebrews chap 11. We're going to pick it up in verse 8.
Here's what the word of the Lord has to say. By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise as in a foreign land living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God's.
By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive even when she was past the age since she considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man and him as good as dead were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. And by faith, Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac.
And he who had received the promises was in the act of offering him up as his only son, of whom it was said, "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. Now, I don't know if you know this, but there is a lot in the Bible written about Abraham. A lot. And so at best what we can do is do a fly over.
There's going to be things that we just cannot unpack here this morning. And so if there are things that you'd like to do, I encourage you go and read through the life of Abraham. But the first thing we're going to stick a lot in Hebrews 11 this morning because it really just gives us an overview, a nice snapshot of the faith of Abraham. And the first thing is found in verse 8 and N. And that is that Abraham is obedient to God's call. Notice what he says here.
By faith, verse 8, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out not knowing where he was going. What faith. This is this is the first and and perhaps most most obvious act of faith of Abraham, right? He obeyed when he was called. So this God, as we we sent out this picture, this Yahweh shows up to Abraham.
Abraham has no concept. He's he's from the land of the Calaldanss. The Calaldanss were very polytheistic in in their beliefs. In other words, they worshiped hundreds of gods. Not three or four or five, hundreds of gods. Different gods at different seasons at different times. And this looked it took on festivals. It took on the nature of sacrifice.
Lots of cultic type scenarios. This is all Abraham knew. He knew this from his grandfather's grandfather. Like we talked about, this is his family. This is his heritage. This is what Abraham knows. And we understand it's not that God called Abraham when he was 8 or 10 or 11 or 12. At this point, we read in Genesis 12. He is about 75. He's 75 years old. There's an old saying, you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Just ask Ron Lagowski. It's really tough, right? He's 75 years. This He is entrenched. This is what he knows. And so God shows up and says, "I need you. I'm calling you out of the land of the Calaldanss. I want you to forsake everything. Your father's house, your father's idols, your whole existence, Abraham. I want you to abandon that, forsake that, and I want you to follow me.
And I love it. He goes in the end of verse 8, he says, "He went out not knowing where he was going. He has no home. He doesn't know. And yet by faith he went. He heard the call. He obeyed and he went. This is this is divine. This is not that Abraham is so awesome and great. This is a divine faith that the Lord has given to Abraham.
He went out not knowing where he was going. By faith, Abraham was obedient to God's call. Now, if you've been with us over the last number of weeks, you have heard us talk a lot about what faith is. And faith is obedience. That's this is what we see. And so, I want to try for this moment because I'm guessing just going to lay my cards on the table. I'm guessing that many of us in this room are not going to be called to travel 500 miles to a place we've never seen and never heard of.
I'm trusting that our call in our life is not going to be similar to Abraham's. And yet I think we have to ask the self the question, how can does God call us to anything? Are we obedient to God's call? And I want to draw our attention here for just a few moments on and this not an exhaustive list, but there are things that God calls his people to do that we must be obedient to. And the first thing is I want to point our direction to 1 Timothy chapter 3.
1 Timothy chapter 3. The church is called to something. This is more so I want to say not not only but it is directed to the church and the the elders of the church are called to to lead in this. But look at what Paul writes to Timothy. He says,"I hope," in verse 14 of chapter 3, "I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and debutress of the truth."
The church to be obedient to the call of God. When when the church looks at us, what should we do? While the church must be a pillar and a buttress of the truth, a a stronghold, something that holds up the truth of God's word. That's what the church is called. The church is not called to be a obedient to the culture around them or to tiptoe around the truth, but to be bold in upholding the truth and saying, "This is where we stand.
And the primary people within the church that are going to set the tone for that is the elders and the leadership of the of the church are called to uphold and be a pillar and a buttress of the truth. We must be obedient to that call. Like Abraham was obedient to his call, the church must be obedient to their call to be a pillar and a buttress of the truth. CH Spurgeon once said this quote, "The church does not determine what the Bible teaches.
It is the Bible that determines what the church must teach." And so true. I do not come to the word of God and say, "This is what I think it's must supposed to say. This is what it teaches." No, no, no. The Bible informs what the church teaches as a way to stand as a pillar and a buttress of the truth. That's the church. Turn with me now to Ephesians chapter 5.
Ephesians chapter 5. There's a lot going on here. There's a whole picture of husbands and wives and a picture of the gospel. And I want to boil it down here to verse 33. And I'm going to read to verse chapter 6 verse 2 says this. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself. And let the wife see that she respects her husband. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother.
This is the first commandment with a promise. If you are a husband in this room, what has God called you to do? Among other things, says, "Let each one of you love his wife as himself." And if we read the rest of chapter 5, this love is very specific. This love by its very nature is sacrificial. Husbands, are you sacrificially loving your wives as God's call on your life?
Are you coming home from a busy day of work, kicking your shoes off, laying on the couch, and being like, "I'm good now. Now she can serve me, make me supper, and I'm going to just throw everything aside cuz I've worked a long hard day. I'm going to sit here and I'm going to play computer games for the next four hours until I go to bed. That is not sacrificially loving your wife. Men, husbands, God did not create and design you to go to bed at night rested.
We chuckle. He created you to go to bed tired from working and sacrificially loving your families. That's God's call. Wives, you're not exempt from this. Let the wife see that she respects her husband. Wives Bad mouthing and speaking ill of your husband in a group of women is not respecting your husbands.
Constantly finding ways where he's not fulfilling his roles and bringing it again and again and again and again is not respecting your husbands. But championing them, being their biggest cheerleader as they desire to sacrificially lay their lives down for you and your family. That is God's call on your life. These things are hard.
Children, I know you're in here. Notice what the text says. God's call on your life. Obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. Honor your father and your mother. Your parents are doing their best to speak well of your of your parents when they ask you to clean your rooms. Austin, we clean our rooms to love your mom and dad, to walk in obedience, desiring to honor them by the way you speak about them, by the way you speak to them.
Honor your mother and your father. This is God's call on your life. Christian, you are a follower of Jesus Christ in this room. You claim Christ as your Lord and Savior. Pursue holiness. 1 Peter 1:es 15 and 16. But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.
Since it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy. God's call on your life is to hate your sin and to love holiness and righteousness. To continue to be sanctified in Christ is God's call on your life. Non-believer, someone, there are many in this room who do not love the Lord. Guess what? God has a call on your life, too.
That call is this. Repent of your sin and believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ. Lest you fall under his righteous, holy wrath and spend eternity away from him in hell. Repent and believe. Acts chapter 2 verse 38. After Peter gives his great sermon, the men of Israel were were cut to the heart and they say, "Brothers, what shall we do in light of this gospel?
In light of what you've just preached, what ought we to do?" And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the Holy Spirit." Repent and believe. This is by no means a exhaustive list of God's call on our lives. But at every single one of us is in one of these lists.
Asking yourself, what is God's call on my life? Let us be people who walk in obedience to God's call. Second, I'm going back to Hebrews chapter 11, picking it up in verse 10. And in in speaking about Abraham, he says this, "For he, that is Abraham, was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God." I love this.
You see, Abraham no doubt was was looking forward to the place that God would show him. And yet, it seems that Abraham Abraham had had something else in mind still. He's looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer or if you are in the LSB, that that translation might actually be architect, the the the builder, the architect. She's looking forward to a city in which God is the designer, the architect, the builder.
He is heavenly minded. That's what Abraham is here. In fact, in that portion there in verses 13 to 16, we're never actually told who the verse 13 who these all died. We're never told who these are. Is it just Abraham and Sarah? Or is it everyone we've looked at up to this point? Or is it considering all of the patriarchs?
We're not sure. But notice in that little paricopy from 13 to 16, notice what it says here. Verse 16. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. The people of faith, if you're marked by faith, you are to be heavenly minded, anticipating a city that is to come.
There's an old saying, he's so heavenly minded that he's no earthly good. And I'm just going to lay my cards on the table. I do not like that. In fact, I would say this. In order to be any earthly good, you must be heavenly minded. Christians ought to be so focused, so gazed upon the heavenly city that is to come is ensuring our hope, our satisfaction, our joy, our mission, our role so focused on glory that you will be earthly good.
This is what Abraham was anticipating. And friends, my question is, is this where your mind is? Do you get your mission in life from the glory of God and a desire to see his glory among the nations, among the people, your neighbors, your co-workers? See, take a look. Flip over. You may not even have to flip your page.
Hebrews chapter 13. I want to pick it up here in verse 13. Here's what the word says. Therefore, in in speaking about Jesus being suffered outside of the city and and propitiating his people and saving his people, he says, "Therefore, let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach that he endured.
For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come." In other words, he's saying, "Listen, on in this city, in this land, on this side of eternity, there will be burdens and heartache and difficulty. And if you're seeking hope and joy and satisfaction here, you're going to be sorely disappointed." And yet, that is why we seek or we long for a city that is to come.
A city where there's no more sin, no more temptation to sin, joy for eternity, hope for eternity, satisfaction in for eternity. In fact, think about this promise that Jesus made in John chapter 14 leading up to John chapter 14 verse 6, which he says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father but through me." Leading up to that statement, here's the interaction with Jesus and his disciples in verse chapter 14, picking it up in verse 1.
He says, "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me." Now, listen to the promise of verse two. Focus here. Listen to what the Lord Jesus himself tells his disciples. In my father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again.
And I will take you to myself that where I am, you may be also. Jesus himself has promised that he's he's going and he's he's preparing a place. Listen, if he's preparing a place for his people, what does he promise he's going to do? He's coming back. He's coming back so that he can take his people with him to that celestial city where there's no pain nor sorrow. And we as followers of Christ get to be face to face with our God.
I'm going to read for you the end a portion of the end of the Pilgrim's Progress. If you've never read The Pilgrim's Progress, I strongly encourage you to do so. John Bunan wrote this. And if you're familiar, the the car the main character's name is Christian. And he leaves and he's on his way and he has to face this Christian walk and he's he's facing despair, fear, anxiety.
He's facing the troubles of this life on his way, his focus, his gaze. He is doing everything he can to get to the celestial city. The end goal is the celestial city. And he gets there. I want you to hear how he articulates this. As he's there, the pilgrims ask, "What will we do in the holy city?" And the shining ones are the the angels that are coming in to usher him fully into the celestial city.
I want you to hear how he articulates this. He says this, "You will there receive the comforts of all your toil and have joy for all your sorrow. You will reap what you have sown, even the fruit of all your prayers and tears and sufferings for the king." along the way. In that place, you will wear crowns of gold and enjoy the perpetual sight and vision of the Holy One.
For there you shall see him as he is. I love that last part. The crowns of gold, sure. The streets of gold, sure. But think about this. The perpetual sight and vision of the Holy One. For there you will see him as he is. If that doesn't strengthen and encourage the believer to continue to pursue the hardships of this world, I don't know what will.
That there is a city awaiting where we will gaze upon the holy one in perfect worship for all eternity. Abraham anticipated a city like this. The saints of old anticipated a city like this. And we as believers in our walk can anticipate a city like that. What joy there is.
Are you heavenly minded or earthly minded? That's the question. And third and last we're going to address arguably now it it sounds like Abraham leaving his place, leaving his father, leaving everything is a great act of faith. And no doubt that absolutely is an enormous act of faith. But I will put forward to you, it was not his greatest act of faith. But twice in our text in Hebrews chap 11, we see this idea of life or going from death to life.
Take a look in verse 12 and then we're going to jump down to 17. And 19 verse 12. Therefore from one man and him as good as dead were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. Like first off, Abraham by the time he had Isaac was around 100 years old.
Now I don't know if you're aware of this, but being able to bear children at a 100red years old is very unlikely. In fact, I'm going to say biologically impossible. Right? In fact, the text says he was as good as dead. Romans chapter 4 verse 19 echoes this same language. It says this.
He that is speaking about Abraham did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body which was as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. There's no situation in which Abraham and Sarah should have bore children. They were as good as dead. And yet when God steps in, they went from death to life and they bore Isaac.
Well, I want us to turn actually to Genesis chapter 22. Genesis chap 22 is an unbelievable act of faith where they go from death to life. I want to pick it up in verse one and I'm going to read through verse 14.
After these things, God tested Abraham and said to Abra, said to him, Abraham and he said, "Here I am." He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Mariah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains on which I shall tell you." So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut wood for the burnt offering, and arose, and went to the place of which God had told him.
On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young man, "Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there, worship, and come again to you." Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. Isaac said to his father, Abraham, "My father," he said.
Here I am, my son, he said. Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? Abraham said, "God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So they went, both of them together. And when they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, then laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
And Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said,"Abraham, Abraham." And he said, "Here I am." He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, seeing that you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me." Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
So Abraham called the name of that place, the Lord will provide. As it is said to this day, on the mount of the Lord, it shall be provided. You know, when you read an account like this, when we read a narrative, I think sometimes it's hard for us, at least it is for me. It's hard to see, we just see the words. We just see the story. Abraham was told, Abraham went, Abraham was asked a question. Abraham answered.
They went up. He laid his son. He was about to kill him. He didn't because the Lord stepped in. There was a ram. They sacrificed him. The end. I cannot help but think there had to have been some form in Abraham's heart and mind where yes, he's walking in obedience. Yes, he is walking by faith. In fact, Hebrews chap 11 tells us that he considered that God was able to bring him back from even from the dead.
So Abraham clearly in his thinking was like I am going to slay my son on the altar and when I do the Lord if he desires will raise him from the dead. That is faith that is inexplicable. And yet I can't imagine there had to have been some emotion and some heartache as his son looks up to him and says, "Dad, we got everything there. Where's Where's the ram? Where's Where's the lamp?
Wears the sacrifice to which Abraham knows son you are the sacrifice it is you and yet he's like the Lord will provide Abraham doesn't know how I can't imagine that it was easy to build that altar lay your son bound him and raise that knife to slaughter your son I don't imagine that that was easy. And yet it was obedience.
And yet Abraham was fully affirmed that God could raise this boy from the dead if he had to. He laid everything on the altar for the purpose of worshiping God. There's two things that I want to draw out from this text. And the first thing is that very truth. There is nothing that Abraham withheld from the Lord. Nothing.
Even his only son, the son through whom the promise would come, he was willing to sacrifice everything. I'm gonna argue and perhaps it's because of my lack of faith. I could not have done that. See, I would say within the Christian world that we understand that idolatry is bad.
We understand in our minds, we know that we are not to keep anything from the Lord. Nothing. And so we look at our jobs and we say, "Lord, if I lose this job, that's okay. I can trust you. You will take care of me. If we don't have a place to live, we can look and say, Lord, I trust you. You will take care of me." We're okay with letting those things go. But then when we look at our children, we say, "I'm just I'm just gonna keep this one here. Okay.
Okay, Lord. I tr I trust you with all of this, but I I I'm I'm going to keep my my my kids here. I if if I don't look after them, nobody will." And so we we we wrap our children in this little cocoon as this desire to say if I can keep them right here, they're going to be perfectly safe and nothing nothing can get them. This this is this is a safe house.
Rather than building into them, rather than teaching and training and then saying,"Lord, this is hard, but I got to let them go. I entrust them to you as Christian parents." And believe me, as I'm looking this and as I wrote this down in my notes, I'm like, I don't want to say this because I have four kids that I want to keep right here. If they stay here, they're safe. Are we willing to just entrust our children to the Lord?
I've read from Pilgrim's Progress. So, my next illustration is going to naturally come from John Bunan. John Bunan was imprisoned. Imprisoned for preaching and proclaiming the gospel. The authorities did not like that. So, they imprisoned him. And he was there. And here he wrote this quote. I saw in this condition I was a man who was pulling down his house upon the head of his wife and children.
In other words, what he's talking about is I couldn't protect my house from prison. I couldn't protect my wife from prison. I couldn't protect my children from prison. It was as if me being imprisoned was pulling down my house upon my family. And if I just recant, if I just say yes, I will not preach this anymore. I can go home and I can protect my family. Yet thought I I must do it. I must do it.
The dearest idol I have known. Whatever idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne and worship only thee. Let me worship you alone. And if that means that there I'm imprisoned and I am killed and I cannot take care of my family, Lord, so be it that I would worship you alone. Let me lay everything everything on that altar that there would be no idol within my heart that I can worship you and you alone for you are worthy of worship.
And the question comes, dear brothers and sisters, the question comes, why? Why would any Christian do that? Well, the second thing in this account is found in verse 8 and then in verse 13 and 14 in Genesis chapter 22. So as Abraham's son is is looking up to him, where where is the sacrifice?
Dad, father Abraham said, "God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son. The Lord will provide for himself." Then verse 13, Abraham lifts up his eyes and he looked and behold behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.
And Abraham went and took the ram and he offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. Now notice what Abraham calls this place. The Lord will provide. As it is said on this day, on the mount of the Lord it shall be provided. The Lord will provide the lamb. If you cannot see the gospel jumping off of this page, I'm going to guess you don't understand fully the depth of the gospel because my friends, thousands of years later, the Lord provided the lamb for the sacrifice.
Where the Lord laid his own son on that cross, where the Lord himself raised his hand and with a swift blow slayed his only son, the lamb that was provided for the forgiveness of sins was his own son from which he did not withhold that but gave him up so that you and I could go from death to life.
This is what our God has done. Abraham's life, Abraham's life is a picture of faith. Abraham's life. When we are running that endurance race and we look to our left, Abraham's account says, "Look away from me and look to the celestial city.
Look to the finished work of Christ on the cross. Live for the purpose of bringing glory to God." Abraham's life is a picture of the gospel where Christ laid his life down for us. His life was not perfect, but his life was faithful. Does our life look like this?
Do we live in light of eternity? Does our lives desire to bring glory to God where we will lay everything everything on the altar so that we can say like John Bunan, the dearest idol I have known, help me to tear it from thy throne and worship only thee. Let's pray.
Father, we recognize this morning that we look at the life of Abraham and we think, man, how how and we look upon you, God, you are so patient with us.
